“Does this make me a housewife?” is a photographic series of self-portraits that portray a woman embodying certain stereotypical female traits.
The project delves into the narrative surrounding these stereotypes and the internal questioning they provoke. Is my preference for blonde hair indicative of a lack of independence? Does embracing romance and femininity, in ways considered stereotypical, relegate me to the role of a housewife? What if these choices simply reflect my personal preferences? What if I enjoy painting my nails red or desire marriage and kids? And what if the answer to all these questions is yes? Does that automatically categorize me as a stereotypical housewife? Can't these choices be a result of careful consideration and personal agency, despite inevitably containing some stereotypes? Why can't all the above also symbolize my independence, my willing, my freedom, my dignity, my choice.
